Canterbury Energy Wellbeing Collective
The Canterbury Energy Wellbeing Collective is an informal group of around 20 organisations and individuals who formed in 2022 after meeting at the Energy Hub to explore how we could collaborate towards a more equitable energy future.
We meet monthly to share progress on our mahi, learnings, and opportunities.
Focus areas are data, energy literacy, healthy homes and community energy innovation.
Re-energising! Local action to accelerate energy transitions!
Canterbury Energy Wellbeing Collective | 16 June 2026 | Tūranga, Ōtautahi Christchurch
The Canterbury Energy Wellbeing Collective brought local leaders together to discuss practical ways to speed up Canterbury’s energy transition.
The panel, facilitated by Sam Elder and featuring Dr Rod Carr, Cate Kearney, Nigel Barbour and Professor Simon Kingham, highlighted that Canterbury already has the technology to become more energy independent. Electric vehicles are cheaper to run, community solar needs careful planning, and shifting electricity use to off-peak times could save around $3 billion in infrastructure costs. They also stressed that the transition must be fair so vulnerable households are not left behind.
